Charlotte Lawrence has built a devoted, quickly growing following with her smoky vocals, emotionally raw lyrics, and cinematic pop sound. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter started writing songs at 12 and now reaches millions of monthly listeners with songs that feel intensely personal, including “Dog,” a standout from her debut album “Somewhere.”
Fresh off tour with breakout pop artist Sombr, Lawrence shares her sexiest song picks—exclusively for Playboy.
If you had to pick just one—who’s your favorite artist of all time?
Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens (pretend that’s just one long name).
If you could write with someone you haven’t written with yet, who would it be?
Sufjan Stevens.
What song do you wish you’d written?
“Anthems for a Seventeen-year-old Girl” by Broken Social Scene.
What do you think are the world’s sexiest date spots?
Jones in Hollywood, L’ami louis in Paris, Horses and Divorces in New York, Pace in Laurel Canyon, All Time in Silverlake (it really is the best), Bowery Bar in New York, or Jumbo’s Clown Room in Hollywood. It’s a favorite.
What’s the best song for a first kiss?
“No Ordinary Love” by Sade.
What’s a song that is too good to talk over?
“Lover You Should’ve Come Over” by Jeff Buckley.
What music do you ban in the bedroom?
New age emo music, bro country music.
What are three things people do that give you the ick?
If you’re unhygienic in any way (ew), have no interest in growing or learning, if you vape.
Have you ever written a song hoping one specific person would hear it? What happened?
One hundred percent I have, many times. I hope they heard it. It’s a way to say what I want to say, but would never actually say. So, I sing it instead. I think it’s a sweet but fucked up version of a love letter.
What’s next for you?
I’m going to finish my second album the minute I get home from this tour, and then tour again, and then release more, and then tour again, and learn and love and live and never stop.
