The Stanley Cup Final had four insane games before Game 5, when the Carolina Hurricanes won the first normal contest. They beat the Vegas Golden Knights to take their first series lead at three games to two, and they’re on the brink of the first title in franchise history in 20 years. The Golden Knights, on the other hand, will now have to fight to get back to Raleigh for a Game 7.

Hurricanes take Game 5 in normal fashion

Technically, Stanley Cup Final Game 5 did include a comeback, but it was a 1-0 deficit in the first period that the Carolina Hurricanes erased. They took a 4-1 lead in the third period, though the final minutes were not without drama. After a second Pavel Dorofeyev goal, the Knights had a power play and pulled the goalie for a two-man advantage, but couldn’t score.

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour believes this is more along the lines of what he expected from his club. “I liked our effort for sure, and I hope we’re getting better,” Brind’Amour said. “I think there’s certain areas of our game that are starting to look a lot like we need it to look. But I do think there’s still another level that we’re going to need to get to find that next one.”

Jordan Staal continued his ridiculous Stanley Cup Final, tying the record with goals in five consecutive Final outings. He has six goals in five games, and he is now the favorite to win the Conn Smythe, which had previously been Mitch Marner’s to lose.

Marner has been the best player the entire postseason, but Staal’s brilliance in the Final, combined with his team’s chances of winning (now -420 to win it all), has given him the edge over Marner. Staal is -105, while Marner is +310.

John Tortorella vows a return to Raleigh

Vegas Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella has seen his team blow two games in a row with a chance to put the mightier Hurricanes on the brink. But he is certain his team will at least find a way to force a Game 7 in what has been one of the wildest Cup Finals in NHL history.

“We’ll be back here. We’re just going to do it in a different order,” Tortorella said after the loss. “I’m going to leave my clothes here. That’s for sure. They’ll be in the hotel.” Defenseman Brayden McNabb added that the Knights have done it “the hard way” all year, so this adversity isn’t new. They just have to win Game 6.

Tortorella also provided two key updates on players. First, he doesn’t expect William Karlsson to return. He left Game 5 after a big hit from Sean Walker, and the coach believes his season is over. He also shot down a question over benching Carter Hart in goal, as Hart has now given up three or more goals in every contest so far.

Despite being at home, the Golden Knights are slight underdogs. They were slight underdogs at home in Game 4, when they lost 5-3 after mounting a two-goal comeback in the second period. The Canes are -113, while the Knights are -106 to send the series back to Raleigh.
