The Men’s College World Series is set. The UNC Tar Heels will take on the Oklahoma Sooners after both blasted their way into the finale. The two teams scored a combined 23 runs in their decisive victories on Wednesday. Now, they’ll face off for the ultimate prize.
The Tar Heels have been to the College World Series final twice before. They lost in 2006 and 2007, but have not been back since. The Sooners have won the title twice, and their most recent trip was in 2022, when they lost to Ole Miss.
The UNC Tar Heels have one of the best pitching staffs in the country. They’ve largely relied on that staff to get them this far, as they’ve survived several low-scoring affairs with late comebacks thanks to pitchers who routinely shut down opponents. They would not have even survived the Super Regional at home without elite, dominant pitching.
This time, though, the Tar Heels gave their pitchers a break, busting out for 12 runs in their second win over West Virginia in the tournament. After getting out of the Super Regional, the Heels have not lost once, but their offense hasn’t always been up to par.
“We were joking before the game today, like, ‘Man, we need to have one of those games where we get 15 hits and score some runs,'” Carolina coach Scott Forbes said. “So thankfully that happened.” The Heels built a 12-1 lead before West Virginia scored five in an inning, all with two outs, and tacked on another after, but it never got closer than 12-7.
The offense had been sputtering with a .217 average with runners in scoring position, but they hit .800 with RISP against the Mountaineers. The Heels also had five extra-base hits and scored their most runs and hits, with 16 of them, in nine NCAA tournament games so far.
Many were predicting Georgia to win the whole thing. They entered the College World Series as the highest remaining seed, ranked third, one ahead of UNC. Instead, they fell victim to an offensive bludgeoning by the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Sooners hit five home runs in the game, which has been a trend for them lately. Oklahoma has smashed an improbable 43 of its 91 total home runs in the past 16 games. They’ve left the ballpark 26 times in just 10 NCAA tournament games
“When you go back and look at what we’ve done in the fall and spring, we never stopped believing and those guys really turned around our year,” said coach Skip Johnson, whose team one month ago was coming out of a run of seven losses in nine games and on its way to an 11th-place finish in the Southeastern Conference.
This will be a true matchup of power against power. Will a dominant pitching staff be able to slow the hottest offense in the sport and keep them in the yard? Time will tell, but the oddsmakers have their opinion. North Carolina is the betting favorite at -190 on major sportsbooks, and the Sooners are +155 to win their third-ever title.
