Spurs Survive Another NBA Finals Thriller to Avoid Major Hole

It was 2-0 in the NBA Finals with the Knicks leading, but that didn't stop the Spurs from securing a win in Game 3.

The San Antonio Spurs survived another NBA Finals thriller against the New York Knicks to avoid the dreaded, insurmountable 3-0 hole. Only a handful of teams have ever come back from down 2-0 to win the NBA Finals, and none have done so when those first two games were at home, so the Spurs have a lot of work to do.

That started in Game 3, when they had to weather an intense Knicks crowd and yet another tight game that came down to the wire. This time, unlike in Games 1 and 2, San Antonio prevailed, postponing some major questions a little longer.

Spurs get over NBA Finals hump with first win

The San Antonio Spurs were a regular-season juggernaut, winning 60 games. They beat the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games in what many said was the real NBA Finals. The simple fact that they made it that far in the first postseason for the vast majority of their rotation was highly impressive.

It suggested that their inexperience wouldn’t matter, and it hadn’t so far. The series win over the Thunder seemed to prove that. But in the Finals, it did matter. They lost and blew leads in Games 1 and 2. The experienced Knicks knew how to close, and San Antonio didn’t. That was extremely evident in Game 2, when a costly, foolish turnover by Victor Wembanyama led to the loss.

This time, though, they figured it out. They weathered every storm the Knicks threw at them, and they held off the late, inevitable comeback with incredibly clutch shot-making. De’Aaron Fox hit a stepback midrange after shooting very poorly to essentially end it.

“I really tried to relax,” said Wembanyama after the win. “The playoffs, it’s like a whirlwind. It’s hard to put your head out of the water. Sometimes, I don’t even have time to watch the games back right away. I need some time off to let my brain cool down, recover. Recover as much for the body as for the mind.”

Mike Brown rips officials after loss

In what ended up being a four-point game, everything matters. Every disparity looms large. The Knicks felt that the biggest disparity, unfairly so, was the free-throw count. Head coach Mike Brown was not pleased with the officiating after the game.

Brown did give credit to the Spurs and hailed them as a team, and he didn’t let his team off the hook. Still, he was displeased with the referees.  “I tell the guys, it’s a seven-game series for a reason. They are a great team,” he said. “There are some things that we can control that I didn’t think that we controlled tonight. And then like I said, maybe we fouled 24 times, but I’m baffled that they only fouled eight in the second half.”

He admitted that the Knicks probably did foul plenty, but he specifically said he spoke with the referees and said, “Maybe we did foul. But they fouled, too.” He even added that he knew the officiating would be a story because he brought it up, but he obviously was not shy about steering the conversation in that direction.
