Tennessee Titans Should Honor Cam Ward’s Latest Request

The Tennessee Titans drafted Cam Ward first overall in the 2025 draft. Not much else has gone right for them. Ward, despite displaying some questionable tendencies at times, does appear to be their franchise QB.

He has shown flashes of one day being a high-end quarterback. To help him reach that, the Titans have to nail the head coach hire this offseason, and they must allow Ward to be involved like he wants to.

Cam Ward Needs to be Somewhat Involved in HC Search

The Tennessee Titans fired Brian Callahan after a rough start this year, effectively cleaning slate from the prior era with Callahan and Will Levis. Now, the task is to find Cam Ward’s next coach.

In that process, Ward has said he would like to be heavily involved. Though the pool won’t consist solely of offensive minds, they will all be tasked with helping guide the rookie quarterback into the future.

“I want to meet all of them,” Ward said of the hiring process per ESPN. “Every coach who gets the opportunity to come here, I want to have conversations throughout the process with them. I’m going to be here for that whole time.”

Ward revealed that Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker and GM Mike Borgonzi had approached the QB about his involvement. And whatever they decide, Ward is said to be all-in on the next head coach regardless of which side of the ball he operates on.

Cam Ward Should Have a Say

Now, a 23-year-old rookie quarterback does not know everything about running a team. Cam Ward also does not know what a coach can do for other players, so the Titans can’t just ask Ward who he prefers and hire him.

The candidate he likes most may also be the best choice from a team perspective, but Ward’s choice can’t be the only factor here. That would be foolish.

However, the young quarterback does need to be involved, and the Titans probably need to hire someone on the offensive side of the ball to help him. Defensive coaches can certainly work, but the majority come from an offensive background.

Look at a few other young quarterbacks for good examples. Ben Johnson has Caleb Williams not only playing well but also headed to a potential division title. The same is true, albeit in a very poor division, of Dave Canales’ work with Bryce Young.

Now, the Patriots (Mike Vrabel with Drake Maye) and Commanders (Dan Quinn with Jayden Daniels) are examples of the opposite, but unlocking a young quarterback routinely comes down to finding the right offensive coach.

HC candidates

There are several good candidates on that side of the ball:

  • Bucs OC Joe Brady
  • Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak
  • Bengals OC Dan Pitcher
  • Former Packers HC Mike McCarthy
  • Cardinals OC Kliff Kingsbury
  • Panthers OC Brad Idzik
  • Ravens OC Todd Monken
  • Chiefs OC Matt Nagy
  • Packers OC Adam Stenavich
  • Broncos passing game coordinator Davis Webb
  • Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman

There are good defensive candidates, but the best pairing for Ward is likely an offensive mind, preferably one with experience working with younger quarterbacks. Brad Idzik, Dan Pitcher, Matt Nagy, and Davis Webb make a lot of sense.

Someone who can work well with Ward is vital, though. He is the Titans’ future, so finding someone to work with him is the most important thing. Whoever that is might not be the best candidate from this cycle, but the Titans have to find their guy.

And to do so, they do have to include Ward in the search. Fortunately, it looks like that’s what’s happening and that the QB is happy to be involved.
