Philip Roth couldn't be completely unfunny if he tried. And The Great American Novel (Holt, Rinehart & Winston) has its moments, such as a one-liner about the midget who is ''a credit to his size.'' But generally, this novel about baseball wanders around too many bases too randomly to yield much in the way of either impact or enjoyment.
