If you’re a ’90s Britpop fan—first of all—how’s your back? I hope you’re getting up to stretch a few times a day, because of the excellent news: Oasis may be getting back together.
Yesterday, both Liam and Noel Gallagher tweeted out a gif that simply read “27.08.24.” The tease also appeared on the official Oasis X account. Needless to say, the speculation is already through the roof across the social media sphere.
Oasis formed way back in 1991 in Manchester, just like another celebrated band from the 1960s—you know the one. They sang about an octopus, once. After seven platinum albums, and countless hit singles including “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova,” and “The Importance of Being Idle,” the band called it quits in 2009. It’s a long story, but in short: the Gallagher brothers make McCartney and Lennon look like Captain and Tennille.
Since then, fans have endlessly speculated when and if the band would ever get back together. The image tweeted out on August 25 has given fans new hope. Of course, it should all be taken with a massive grain of salt. The Gallagher boys are nothing if not lifelong pranksters. Any music journalist interviewing the two can attest to this. Still, it’s fun to speculate.
Could it be a new song? A whole new album? Could the Gallaghers be settling their differences and get back together for good? Or maybe this is simply going to be a “one night only” thing. Oasis is known for setting records, whether it’s selling albums or packing arenas.
Considering the state of the world, it’s best not to get your hopes up too high. When it comes to teases like this, it’s prudent to expect the funniest outcome. If we’re placing bets, I’d put my money on Oasis releasing an NFT.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait long. The big reveal will occur at 8 a.m. Manchester time. That’s midnight, Tuesday, if you’re on the West coast.
