Duke Basketball Lands Third Big Recruit for 2026-27 Season

In a major boost for Duke University’s men’s basketball program, five-star point guard Deron Rippey Jr. announced his commitment to the Blue Devils last week.

The decision comes as the latest triumph in what has been a surging recruiting effort under head coach Jon Scheyer, solidifying Duke’s position as a powerhouse in college hoops. Rippey, hailing from Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, chose Duke over a number of perennial schools that included NC State, Tennessee, Miami, and Texas.

Rippey, ranked as the No. 16 overall prospect in the SC Next 100 and the No. 3 point guard nationally, impressed scouts with his performances on the Adidas 3SSB circuit this summer. Averaging 15.2 points, 5.1 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game, he showcased an explosive style that fits seamlessly into modern college basketball.

This commitment from Rippey arrives at a pivotal time for Duke, which had a relatively late start in assembling its 2026 class but has quickly ascended to the top spot in national rankings. With Rippey’s addition, the Blue Devils now boast three five-star recruits, setting the stage for continued dominance.

Background on Rippey

Rippey brings a blend of athleticism and basketball IQ that makes him a coveted recruit. Standing out as an explosive guard with elite burst in transition, he excels at finishing near the rim thanks to his NBA-level vertical leap and body control.

Over the summer, Rippey improved his perimeter shooting, hitting 38.1% from beyond the arc, adding another dimension to his game. Defensively, he’s tenacious on the ball, using his strength and quickness to disrupt opponents.

Growing up in a basketball-rich environment, Rippey’s development at Blair Academy honed these traits, preparing him for the rigors of ACC play. His work at the Adidas circuit reflects a player ready to contribute immediately, much like Duke’s storied guards of the past.

Intense Recruitment Battle for Rippey

Rippey’s recruitment was a whirlwind of interest from top programs across the country.

He took official visits to Duke, NC State, Tennessee, Miami, and Texas, with perceptions of favorites shifting throughout the fall. Duke ramped up its pursuit after the summer, making Rippey a priority for their backcourt needs.

A key moment was his late October visit to Durham, where he attended a preseason exhibition against UCF, fitting himself in the program’s culture. Ultimately, Duke’s vision for his role sealed the deal.

Impact on Duke’s 2026 Recruiting Class

With Rippey’s commitment, Duke’s 2026 class vaults to No. 1 nationally. Should they choose to stay in school, Rippey would join five-star forwards Cameron Boozer (No. 2 overall) and Bryson Howard (No. 17), along with four-star center Maxime Meyer. This trio of elite talents could mark Scheyer’s third straight top-ranked class if the momentum continues.

Duke got off to a hot start this season but did drop a recent game to Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden in New York City. ACC play began on Dec. 31, with a home game against Georgia Tech, and Duke expected to have one of its best seasons ever.

The program is still eyeing uncommitted guard Jordan Smith Jr., which could further elevate the class. Rippey’s addition not only strengthens the backcourt but signals Duke’s enduring allure in the NIL era, positioning them for future title runs.
