The Philadelphia Eagles lost a tough game on Sunday, and Nick Sirianni and AJ Brown got into it on the sideline. It was an ugly showing on offense for the Eagles, capitalized, perhaps, by the argument between the head coach and his star wide receiver. It is distinctly possible neither will be with the team next year.
Eagles lose as AJ Brown fights with Nick Sirianni
The Philadelphia Eagles lost a home playoff game to the San Francisco 49ers. It was a back-and-forth affair, and they came up just short. During that game, while they ironically had a lead, Eagles WR AJ Brown could be seen confronting head coach Nick Sirianni on the sideline.
There are multiple layers to this. Brown has been featured in trade rumors endlessly in the last few years. He’s been somewhat displeased with the Eagles’ passing attack, and he even told fantasy football managers on a live stream to trade him.
Sirianni has been a controversial figure. He seems to be coordinator-dependent, and he’s also not shy about fighting with players, fans, and more. He’s been seen yelling at fans while walking to the tunnel. In one such instance in Kansas City, it appeared as if Brown actually rolled his eyes from behind the coach.
Postgame comments
AJ Brown had a couple of crucial drops against the 9ers. He skipped media availability after the loss. For what it’s worth, Nick Sirianni had nothing but kind things to say about the embattled star wide receiver.
“He’s got the best hands I’ve ever seen. The way he catches the ball, the amount of different types of catches that he’s made. When you get as many targets as he does, you’re going to have some drops,” said Sirianni per ESPN. “I know he will beat himself up on that.”
“Think he knows how I feel about him,” Sirianni continued. “I have a special relationship with him. We’ve probably through every emotion you can possibly have together. Laughed together. We’ve cried together. We’ve yelled at each other. We’re both emotional. I was trying to get him off the field, and that happens in this game.”
He admitted that these things happen, but reiterated that he loves Brown. Still, it’s hard not to notice these sorts of things. The Eagles seemed to be, at least on offense, in dysfunction a lot during their 2025 campaign.
The future
Given AJ Brown’s seemingly unhappy status, it would not be a surprise if the Eagles traded him this offseason. He doesn’t seem to love being in a run-centric offense that cannot get him the ball as much as he would like, and with the Eagles not being dominant en route to a Super Bowl win, he might have grown tired of it all.
Nick Sirianni has been to two Super Bowls and won one, and he’s established the Eagles as one of the best teams today. Still, whenever he has good coordinators, his team does well. When they don’t, on one side or both, the team struggles.
In 2022, the Eagles had Shane Steichen (current head coach of the Colts) and Jonathan Gannon (former head coach of the Cardinals). In 2023, Brian Johnson (fired) coordinated offense, and Sean Desai (fired) ran the defense.
Getting Vic Fangio for defense and Kellen Moore (Saints head coach) for the offense paved the way to a historic year and a Super Bowl title. But with Moore gone, the offense regressed mightily under Kevin Patullo.
Sirianni was already somewhat controversial, and with how seemingly dependent he is on having good coordinators, it might be worth pursuing a new head coach. However, he is highly successful and, perhaps excluding Brown, the players seem to like him. His future remains a mystery.
