Mahina Florence
"When you get off the plane, the air smells sweet and salty but not fishy. It's a big hug for your nostrils," Mahina says, laughing, describing the sensory embrace of returning home to Hawaii. For the 31-year-old Oahu native, that olfactory greeting represents ancestry calling.
Mahina hails from the Mahi 'Ohana, direct descendants of King Kalākaua, who helped shape Hawaii's kingdom in the 19th
century. "It's cool that our bloodline comes from that," she says of her roots that stretch back generations across the islands. Growing up on the North Shore in Pūpūkea, she lived within a seven-mile stretch of some of the world's best beach breaks. Her family was nestled up the mountain, while her husband Nathan's family resided 15 minutes away, on the coastline below.
